Blending Perspectives for Effective Team Problem-Solving: An Integrative Approach
What can we do to integrate different cultural perspectives into effective team problem-solving?
Effective team problem-solving demands more than just technical expertise or individual brilliance. It requires an understanding of different cultural perspectives and an ability to integrate these into a cohesive, functional whole.
New Zealand, with its unique blend of cultures, has an opportunity for such integration nationally. Tangata Tiriti (people of the Treaty) which includes all cultural backgrounds and Tangata Whenua (people of the Land) have a profound opportunity to pave a way forward.
Diverse Perspectives: A Convergence for Success
The European perspective, as an example, with its emphasis on individual achievement and task-oriented approaches, brings to the table efficiency, innovation, and a focus on getting things done.
On the other hand, the Māori worldview adds invaluable dimensions of community, interconnectedness, and a deep respect for the environment. Māori concepts like “whanaungatanga” (kinship) and “kaitiakitanga” (guardianship) enrich the discussions by prioritising relationships and sustainability.
Both world views encourage thinking and behaviour necessary for sustainable high performance.
Human Synergistics Circumplex: A Framework for Understanding
In my work, the Human Synergistics Circumplex provides a framework to understand and navigate thinking and behaviour in a workplace setting.
This model, dividing behaviours into Constructive, Passive/Defensive, and Aggressive/Defensive categories, highlights the importance of balancing a people-orientation with a task-orientation.
To help groups to be more constructive in their behaviour I create a space that starts with being Affiliative (connection first), then Humanistic-Encouraging (learning from each other). These are people oriented behaviour styles. Next is Self-Actualizing (contributing what you know) before collective Achievement (collaborative problem solving), which are task oriented.
Try this in your next group session. It works!
Practical Application – Effective Problem Solving in multi-cultural groups
An effective strategy in multicultural team environments is to follow the same process and leverage the strengths of all cultures. Begin by getting to know each other, focusing on building relationships and trust. Karakia tīmitanga (opening affirmation) in a Māori worldview is used as a medium to connect. Set the intention with a Karakia. Then create an environment where people can learn from each others perspective. Whakawhanuangatanga (introductions) sets the scene for this. These steps are crucial in any problem solving process but especially in cultures that value community and emotional connections.
The progression then moves towards self-actualizing and achievement-oriented behaviours, channeling the knowledge, strengths and perspectives of each team member towards common goals. Rational problem solving is enhanced when the right connection between people has been created. This approach not only enhances team cohesion but also ensures that tasks are approached efficiently and effectively.
This is an effective way to bridge that gap between cultural perspectives.
The Role of a Facilitator in Bridging Worlds
In this context, the role of a facilitator becomes crucial. A skilled facilitator can help teams navigate these cultural and behavioural nuances, ensuring that the strengths of each perspective are harnessed. They can guide teams to start with connecting as people, understanding each other’s backgrounds, values and interests, and then gradually guide them towards leveraging their diverse perspectives and interests for collective problem-solving.
You can do this without te reo, but, if you are in New Zealand, a commitment to encorparting it is a commitment to a unique opportunity.
To wrap up
The ability to integrate different worldviews into a cohesive approach to problem-solving is invaluable. Just like working at a team level, New Zealand’s journey offers the potential to lead how this can be achieved globally, with the right blend of respect, understanding, and strategic thinking.
