Daring Leadership
Daring Leadership is a leadership philosophy developed by Brené Brown, based on her research into vulnerability, courage, and resilience. It challenges traditional leadership approaches by encouraging leaders to embrace discomfort, take risks, and lead with authenticity.
Key Principles of Daring Leadership:
1. Courage Over Comfort
• Leaders must be willing to have hard conversations, take risks, and face uncertainty rather than avoiding difficult issues.
• This means making decisions based on values, not fear—even when those decisions are unpopular or uncomfortable.
2. Lead with Vulnerability
• Vulnerability is not weakness but the foundation of strong leadership.
• Leaders must be open, honest, and willing to admit when they don’t have all the answers.
• This builds trust and psychological safety within teams.
3. Embrace Wholehearted Leadership
• Daring leaders don’t wear masks or pretend to have it all together.
• They model authenticity, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence, encouraging others to do the same.
4. Build Trust with BRAVING
• Brown outlines seven key elements of trust, called the BRAVING framework:
• Boundaries – Set and respect limits.
• Reliability – Do what you say you’ll do.
• Accountability – Own mistakes and learn from them.
• Vault – Keep confidences; no gossiping.
• Integrity – Choose courage over comfort.
• Nonjudgment – Allow people to be honest without fear of judgment.
• Generosity – Assume the best in others.
5. Lead with Clear Values
• Daring leaders have clarity on their values and use them as a compass for decision-making.
• They help their teams define and align with shared values rather than just focusing on results.
6. Cultivate a Culture of Belonging
• Daring leadership means creating an environment where people feel seen, valued, and heard.
• This requires inclusion, empathy, and actively addressing toxic behaviors.
7. Rise Strong After Failure
• Failure is inevitable in leadership, but daring leaders normalize struggle and model resilience.
• Brown’s “Rising Strong” process: Recognize the fall, own your story, and rise again with new learning.
Benefits of Daring Leadership:
• Creates psychologically safe workplaces, where people can speak up and take risks.
• Encourages bold decision-making and innovation.
• Builds trust and engagement across teams.
• Helps organizations navigate change and uncertainty with resilience.
Application in Organisations:
Daring Leadership is valuable in:
• Corporate and Industrial Relations (encouraging open, constructive dialogue).
• Change Management (helping teams embrace uncertainty).
• High-Performance Cultures (fostering accountability, trust, and learning).
• Customer-Centric Organizations (creating genuine engagement and connection).
This approach aligns with HPtE Strategy®️, as it fosters a culture where people feel safe to challenge, innovate, and engage—critical for finding synergy between commercial responsibility, customer value, and culture.
